Well known for his portrayal of the physically powerful and threatening world at sea, experienced whilst in the Merchant Navy; Tony helped restore Brunnel’s SS Great Britain and returned countless working tugs and trawlers to life. During this time he filled thousands of sketchbooks with his skillful observational drawings. Largely self taught, it was those classes taken at Manchester School of Art, Bristol and Cardiff following his navy life that help Tony bring his unique visceral style to fruition. Tony enjoyed the tactile experience of painting with his fingers , he would scratch into the surface created by the oil paint/bitumen mix he favoured – you can often find the imprint of his thumb on a piece of his work! Exhibiting widely, he was a prize-winner at the Royal Society of Marine Artists whilst showing with The Mall Galleries, London. We are so thrilled to be asked by Tony’s family to exhibit his work and in doing so, celebrate his life of passionate creation.
